How to Live a Happier Life, My Top Tips. | AbbieNicole

Hey guys,

Today I’m going to be giving you my top tips on how to live a happier, healthier life. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health so it’s important that we try and look after it! We all have down days & days when we wish we could change certain things in our lives, hopefully this post will get you on track to feeling better within yourself.

Start small.

My best tip to transitioning into a happier life is to make small changes and work your way up. You don’t want to force things, it’s meant to be natural! Changing small factors in your life can make a huge impact, don’t rush yourself.

Strive for progress, not perfection.

There has been too many occasions in my life where I have felt so deflated and upset with myself because I have only come so far and not the whole way. We have to recognise progress as an accomplishment. You’ll get to where you want to be in the end but until then take it step by step and remember how far you have come.

Smile more.

Simple, right? I’ve never particularly liked my smile so I would always avoid smiling in pictures or in front of people I wasn’t comfortable with. Smiling is a natural movement, it shows we are happy! I personally think of smiling as contagious, like a yawn, I like to smile at people as I pass them in the street or as I open a door for them etc.. 

Care less about what others think.

Caring too much about other peoples opinions of you can be soul destroying, you spend too much time trying to please others and forgetting who you truly are. You want to be happy within yourself and I don’t believe you can be when you’re trying to impress others. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but do not let it define you.

Act kindly towards others.

It’s nice to be nice. You’ll honestly feel better about yourself if you are kinder to other people. Small acts of kindness really do mean the world to people and it’s so easy to do. See if there is anything you can do to help a family member or friend, especially if they are stressed or upset. For instance; my wonderful Granddad is hard of hearing and needed to make a doctors appointment but he doesn’t like to use phones as he can’t hear that well, I called & sorted everything out for him including future appointments. To someone like me, that is no effort at all, it meant a lot to him that I did it though as he was worried about it.

Eat well.

Love yourself enough to be healthy! Eat good foods that make you feel great. More fruit, more veg, drink more water and learn new exciting recipes! The more colour the better.

Be more active.

It is a well known fact that exercising makes you feel good. Move around more, get outside a few times a week and go for a walk somewhere with beautiful scenery. Start doing short work outs at home. Walk a dog for an hour a day. Any of these things can help improve your mental state. Last year when I felt especially low I started walking my dog every weekday instead of my family doing it and it really helped improve my mood. I now walk my dog 4-5 times a week and work out at home.

Do more of what you love.

Even if you only have a spare 15 minutes a day, fill it with something you enjoy! You could love to bake, paint, sing or do crafts… make sure you make time for your hobbies as they are something that make you happy.

Don’t give up.

There is no better feeling than going through something really tough and coming out the other side when you thought you couldn’t do it. Your mind and body can endure so much more than you think they are capable of, keep pushing though and never give up.

Be yourself.

I touched on this above but just be yourself, not what everyone else wants you to be. We all have individual personalities and that is one of the things that makes up beautiful in our own ways.

Have time to yourself. 

Find some time every week to wind down and relax. You go through a lot in a week, it’s important to de-stress otherwise things can really get on top of you and start to make you feel down and restless. Watch your favourite film, eat your favourite food, have a pamper night with face masks and nail polish, whatever it is that makes you feel relaxed. Please never feel guilty for having time to yourself, whether you’re a busy mother or live on your own and work minimal hours it is always important to give yourself some love. 

Love yourself.

Something I’m still learning. I have body confidence issues and just confidence issues in general. For years people have told me to love myself but every time I looked in the mirror I just couldn’t see anything to love. Finally, a few weeks ago, I looked at my big legs and stomach and liked what I saw. I began to lose weight last year and I’m finally seeing the progress, I understand that I’m a long way from where I want to be but I can love myself every bit of the way. You are enough just as you are and loving yourself really does make a difference when it comes to being truly happy. Refer back to my first tip and start small, none of this happens over night but you will get there.
