My TOP TIPS for weight loss | Carbs, cardio, calories & confidence.

As a lot of you will know, I’ve been trying to lose weight for a while now. I’m pretty happy with my weight loss so far, although slow it has been steady. There are some months where I’m better with my nutrition and exercise and drop more weight than others but I have come to accept that is perfectly normal and it is absolutely ok to not make the same progress every month.

Over the last year there has been a lot of trial and error with things that have and haven’t worked so well for me, I thought I’d share a few of the things I know work well for me personally.

Get into routine as soon as you start.

As soon as you start losing weight you should get into a routine. Know when you’re going to exercise and where you are going to do it. Get in the routine of eating around the same time every day, get in the habit of drinking more water. The more you stick to your routine the faster it will become second nature and you won’t have to thing about it too much.

Watch your carbs but DON’T eliminate them.

Carbs are NOT bad for you, your body needs them. I see so many people cut carbs out completely thinking it’s one of the only ways you can truly lose weight, WRONG. You SHOULD cut down your carbs, absolutely… start making HEALTHIER choices too, buy whole grain products. I limit myself to 2 portions of carbs a day, I make sure that I don’t eat fruit and veg that are high in carbohydrates (you’d be surprised how high some of them really are!) and I have a completely carb free lunch. Over the last few months this has really worked for me.

Seek professional help.

I’ve been seeing a dietician for over a year now and it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made. My consultant made a referral for me last year and I’ve never looked back. At one point I was restricting myself with food so much that I was barely reaching 700 calories a day, which was the worst think I could have possibly done. My dietician always tells me what is and isn’t working for me, why I’m not losing weight and helps me make HEALTHY, SMART decisions. Remember being ‘healthy’ doesn’t mean cutting your calories right down!


Yes, I do watch my calories. I don’t obsessively count them all the time but I’ve done so much research in food and nutrition that I always have a rough idea of how many calories are in every meal I have. A woman daily allowance of calories is 2000, in order to lose weight you need to decrease that amount. After talking to my dietician we decided that 1,600 calories a day would be suitable for me, as well as burning around 300 calories a day with exercise which brings me down to 1,300 a day. It doesn’t matter how tall you are, how much you weigh or what your gender is, if you don’t reduce the amount of calories you’re having you won’t lose weight.


Exercise isn’t just good for weight loss, it pays to be fit. Love your body and it will love you back. It also improves your mental health & mood, which has been a god send for me! The best exercise you can do to lose weight is cardio, there is no way around it, don’t avoid it as the longer you leave it the less likely you are to do it regularly. Let me tell you now… WALKING counts. Get out of the house, walk for an hour a day and it will make a difference! I started off by walking 6 days a week and it really helped me. Now I walk for an hour 4 times a week, run for half an hour 5 days a week and do a HIIT work out twice a week. HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training, if you’ve never heard of it before you need to look into it! HIIT is one of the most effective forms of exercise for weight loss and if you’re looking for someone to teach you, check out JOE from ‘lean in 15’ on youtube, he has loads of videos you can use at home! If you feel unfit, like we all do when we first get into exercise, don’t give up. PUSH yourself.


Natural sugar is fine, fuel your body with fruit… thats ok! You need to say goodbye to the sweet treats though, sugar is going to make you pile on the pounds faster than you can imagine. Allow yourself a treat every now and then but other than that… chocolate bars are a NO GO.


No high sugar squash, no teas and coffees loaded with sugar, just pure water, sugar free squash and herbal teas! Keep yourself hydrated, it is SO important. You body NEEDS fluids, especially when you’re exercising!

Alcohol & fizzy drinks are really a no no..

It is PACKED full of calories you do not want and then if you’re mixing it with fizzy drinks… well, its just not going to allow you to drop weight. I don’t drink at all any more and if I do it’ll be 1 glass of something once a year, that’s personal choice but I know I can’t drink if I want to lose weight. Fizzy drinks are full of SUGAR and SUGAR is the DEVIL.



Everyone needs a treat night, mine is a Friday. Have a glass of wine, have a more indulgent meal… just DON’T go crazy.


Be confident in what you are doing, go for a run and feel happy in yourself when you are doing it. You should be proud of what you are achieving!

I have SO many more tips I could give you but these are probably the most important, these are what have really helped me budge 2 stone and keep it off. I have another 3 stone to lose until I’m at my goal weight and I’ll continue to do all of these to help me get there. I really hope you found this useful, weight loss doesn’t have to be a chore! For me this has turned into a complete lifestyle change and I’m really enjoying it.
